What is Public Relations and how can it be Beneficial to Political Campaigns?

When you think of the public relations profession, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of a company’s re-brand. Or perhaps you recall the statement that one CEO made when they got in trouble, or maybe you’re unsure what public relations even is. That’s okay! Public relations can encompass a lot of things, and the definition has evolved over the years. According to PRSA, the governing body of public relations, “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” As this definition demonstrates, public relations can be many things for different organizations, brands and even individuals. However, for the purpose of this blog, we will focus on public relations and how it pertains to political campaigns and campaigning strategies.

Political campaigns are a hot topic these days, as the presidential election is just around the corner. However, it is important to note that not all political campaigns resemble those that are popular and highly televised. Political campaigns come in all shapes and sizes. From local to state to national elections, every campaign is different and requires a distinct approach. This is where public relations strategies come into play.

Throughout this blog, I hope to explain how public relations can benefit political campaigns at all levels. I want to address a variety of strategies that public relations professionals can use while working with a campaign. I hope to spend some time discussing all types of campaigns while providing general and specific information to help, no matter what part of the process you are in. Not only will I discuss the dos of public relations in campaigns, but I also hope to talk about the don’ts. In addition to discussing what to do and what not to do, I aim to provide solutions for mistakes if they occur along the way. Lastly, it is important to acknowledge that throughout all political campaigns ethics are extremely important, not only for the candidate but also for those organizing the campaign. There will be substantial discussion in the blog about ethics and how to navigate the political campaign world in an honorable way.

Political campaigns are all unique and require someone who knows how to generate the best result for their candidate. Hopefully, this blog provides you with the information you need to know to successfully do your job and help your campaign and candidate receive their desired results.
